Skylight Herb Garden

Skylight Herb Garden

Our apartment only has two windows, both of which have a north-west exposure. From spring to fall we get really intense sun for about an hour in the afternoon before the building across the street eclipses the sun. The rest of the day the light is indirect, and not very helpful for keeping anything green alive. I’ve tried to keep some herbs in the past but they never last.

After talking to one of the vendors at the farmer’s market last week, I decided to give it a try again, but this time by putting a shelf in one of our skylights. The small basil I bought last Saturday has already doubled in size! Since we love to make fresh pesto, we decided to buy two more basil plants today. We also decided to give sage and chives a try. We’ve already discovered that sage can’t take the heat that builds up in the skylight, but it seems to be doing better on a table below the skylight. Hopefully we’ll have better luck getting the herbs to last this time!
